Smart lockdowns will be enforced in seven union councils of Karachi’s District West , a notification from the deputy commissioner said Monday as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the city and now it is inevitable to impose smart lockdown in selective areas.

The notification says that the lockdown will come into effect from December 29 and will stay imposed till January 11, 2021.

Pillion riding has been banned, events and commercial activities like large gatherings and meetings are also prohibited during the lockdown, as per the notification.

Industrial zones in these areas will be closed. However, General stores where groceries and other items of daily use are available and medical stores will remain open only, the notification said..

Online taxis and other forms of public transport have been banned in the areas. If a person has to go to the hospital or seek any other health care facility, only 1 person (as attendant) will be allowed to travel with him.

“The government will provide necessary rations in these [affected] areas where smart lockdown has to be imposed,” the notification added.

A day earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that Sindh reported 1,035 cases of the Covid-19 while only Karachi had reported 845 coronavirus cases in a single day.

Three hundred and four cases were reported in District East – 212 South – 169 Central – 107 Korangi – 30 West and 23 in Malir.
